Bey Salih, a phenomenal character

Ahmad Al Khaskhusi
Tunisia

A phenomenal character, Bey Salih has had an impact on history, politics, anthropology, literature, music, theatre and other arts.
This character lives on in people’s minds and hearts; since Bey Salih’s death, the women of eastern Algeria have worn black Abayas as a sign of mourning.

He is part of the collective conscience. Popular in life, Bey Salih became even more popular after his death; he occupies a prominent position in folk culture.
His death was rich with symbolism. When his city was besieged, Bey Salih appeared bareheaded and sat backwards on his horse, signifying the end of his rule.
